We don’t need to tell you that Fortnite is one of the greatest games in the world. As such, it is practically available on every device out there. Few games these days can make such a claim.
Now you may be an avid gamer who has all the consoles, or maybe you only have one. Anyway, you can play Fortnite on any of the current generation of consoles on the market.
The question is what is the advantage of choosing one console over another.
Let’s break it down.
PlayStation 4 and 5
Sony crushed the competition with its PlayStation 4 line (already followed by PlayStation 5 | what to expect?).
With a whopping 112 million units sold during its lifetime, it is the fourth most popular console in gaming history.
This also means that as a platform you literally have many Fortnite players online all hours of the day. Whether you have a standard PS4 or a PS4 Pro, you can play the game on its own. The big advantage is that if for some reason you wanted to play exclusively with other PS4 owners, you could still find matches without any problems, as there are a lot of Fortnite players on the platform.
If this is your first console, the PlayStation 4 also has some great exclusives that make it a better option than the Xbox. There’s also the DS4 controller that we talked about in this article about how good it is for Fortnite.
The PS5 launched in November 2020 and flew off the shelves. See the article PS4 vs PS5 »
The Xbox One line may have lagged behind its Sony counterparts, but it’s still a pretty solid option for getting some Fortnite. If crossplay isn’t your thing, you’ll still find a significant number of Xbox Fortniters to play with.
The standard controller and Xbox Elite are also great for playing Fortnite
The downside Fortnite has on the Xbox platform is that you must have an Xbox Live subscription. It’s not particularly expensive if you want to play a lot. You can also get it with Game Pass attached and have a complete library to play other games with just a monthly subscription.
You can also play Fortnite in 4K on Xbox One S, the version with less power.
Nintendo’s hybrid console may not be the most powerful of the bunch, but it still works like Fortnite butter. This applies to both portable mode and TV mode.
The main advantage of playing on Switch is that you have the option to use your handheld or dock it to your screen. Does daddy want to see the game? Fortnite is still available.
The biggest problem is that without cross-play, the player base on the Switch is significantly smaller.
If you want to play around with an Ethernet cable to reduce lag, you should also buy a USB Ethernet dongle.
Handheld pretty much limits you to Wi-Fi, moreover.
What About Next-Gen Consoles?
However, the next generation of consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, are just around the corner, so you might be wondering if Fortnite will be available on them as well. The answer is yes.
Epic has already talked about the game being available in the fancy new game boxes coming soon. If you already play Fortnite on PS4 and Xbox One, you can even get an upgraded version on the new ones. This includes all progress on your account.
Sometime next year, Epic also plans to give the game a major graphics update for next-gen consoles, again for free, so stay tuned.
So you made your choice of console? Here’s a guick guide on how the game Fortnite actually is meant to play.
