Does Fortnite Require a Graphics Card? – Yes

One of the best things about Fortnite is that you can play the game on almost any hardware that can run a modern game. Since it was first created, this means you can play the game even if you’re playing on a system without a dedicated video card.

However, the game has grown quite a bit and now things are changing. Epic recently announced that the next Fortnite update will bring one of the biggest changes to the game yet – in the future, players will need a dedicated video card to play Fortnite.

Why the Change?

The first thing to remember is that from a very practical standpoint, Fortnite has always been for gamers who have a DirectX-11 compatible graphics card.

While you could technically play the game on an older machine or one that only has a built-in map, that has never been the best way to play the game. Players on these systems would have to lower all their settings and still have a sub-optimal experience.

Not making the graphics cards a requirement has always just been a way of allowing more people to play Fortnite.

However, as development has progressed, including those players has hindered what developers can actually do. Things have always gone a little slower than necessary to ensure that an ever-smaller minority of Fortnite players can continue to play.

Finally removing support for these players will allow Fortnite to continue to grow and change in a way that keeps it competitive and allows for more impressive additions. As it stands, Fortnite is really only doing a fraction of what it should be able to do to satisfy a very small portion of its audience.

The truth is that this is a good move for Fortnite and for players in general. This won’t affect everyone who plays on consoles or mobile devices, and it won’t affect the vast majority of players who play on PC.

If you play practically any other modern PC game, you need a video card, whatever. That Fortnite is on the same level as everyone else is not a bad thing and it certainly allows the game to grow in ways that should be surprising compared to what came before it.

At the very least, this now gives Fortnite the license to do some things that are much more impressive graphically.

What Graphic Card You Need

The good news is that Fortnite really isn’t pushing the boundaries of graphics technology when it comes to future updates. This means you don’t have to invest too much in a graphics card, especially if you just want to keep playing Fortnite.

You need a card that is DirectX 11 compatible, meaning you can use just about any card made over the years.

However, since you now need a graphics card, it is good to choose something that will help you have a better Fortnite experience.

Below are a few recommended video cards

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070

If you really want to go big, this card from Gigabyte won’t steer you wrong. While it’s certainly not a budget card, it’s powered by nVidia’s GeForce GTX 1070 and features a whopping 8GB of RAM.

While it’s not the most expensive or powerful card on the market, it will certainly allow you to run Fortnite on the ultra settings and should be relatively future proof for the next few game updates.

AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB

This great value card is really great for players who don’t want to go broke while playing Fortnite. While it really lacks the bells and whistles that most other graphics cards sell, it’s functional enough to run Fortnite smoothly.

It’s only 4GB, so it probably won’t last forever, but you should be able to beat most major Fortnite updates with ease without any problems.

EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB

This model is halfway between the other graphics cards. With 6GB of RAM in a 1500MHz core clock, it’s strong enough for a round of Fortnite. It’s a solid game card in every way, but you don’t get 4K resolution just yet.

However, if you’re looking for a mid-range price, it won’t do much better than this.

Don’t worry too much about your video card with Fortnite. Pretty much everything released after 2010 will work with the next update, so you have time to change anything.

However, keep an eye on the future and the updates you need to make will continue to make permanent changes to the game.
