Fortnite is one of the most popular games in the world.
Without about two hundred million people playing the game at the same time, it’s very easy to see the game as the king of the mountain.
But after just one month, Apex Legends had reached over fifty million players, and the number just keeps growing.
As the competition heats up, let’s take a look at what the games have in common and how they differ from each other.

- 2 The Differences Between Fortnite and Apex
The Genre – They’re Both Battle Royale
When looking for basic matches, you need to look at the gender. Both Apex and Fortnite are part of the Battle Royale genre, a genre in which players compete against each other in an ever-shrinking game space.
Neither game created the genre, nor did the modern version. Both games have their own unique spin on the concept and both have the ability to use squads, something that definitely falls outside of previous battle royale games like PUBG.
The Concept – They’re Both FPS Games
Both games are essentially shooters. That means the main battle mode in the game is ranged combat and your goal is to kill other players.
Neither game has interesting NPCs, nor is there any real form of interaction outside of combat in either game. In many ways, games take as much notes from older Capture the Flag games as they do from Battle Royale games.
The Cost – They’re Both Free to Play (F2P)
Perhaps the most important thing both games have in common is that they are both free. You don’t have to go to a store to buy a physical copy of one of the games and downloading it is as easy as using the store of your choice on whatever console/platform you have.
Both games monetize through microtransactions and, increasingly, through BattlePass mechanics. The first Apex BattlePass will be released in mid-March 2019, but is expected to follow an almost identical pattern to that found in Fortnite.
Apex is expected to have a very similar monetization pattern to the previous game, with more content being released as the game continues to thrive.
The Differences Between Fortnite and Apex
Heroes vs. Skins – Apex Characters Are Actually Different
Fortnite customization relies heavily on skins that you can purchase from the in-game store. There’s no real difference between the two-player characters, other than the cosmetic options for skins, gliders, and pickaxes.
A player wearing the default skin isn’t necessarily at any disadvantage, though players with certain skins are more likely to be adept at the game due to the way the skins are acquired. Because skins are so important to the overall feel of the game, Fortnite’s third person point of view is a key feature.
Apex, on the other hand, makes use of heroes.
Squad vs. Choice
No two heroes are exactly alike and function more like characters in games like Overwatch or Team Fortress 2. Certain heroes have advantages in specific situations, and squad composition can have a huge impact on the way a game unfolds.
Most of the heroes are in the base game, but new heroes are coming and must be purchased separately. Players will likely become more proficient with specific heroes as the game progresses, and balance adjustments will be made to ensure no hero gets too powerful.
Squad vs. Choice
Apex is a team game. Players can form their own team of three players or be randomly matched with two other players. The object of the game is to make your team win, that’s all.
There are no options and you cannot play alone or in larger groups at this time. In fact, it’s much easier to see the influence of other squad-based games in Apex than in Fortnite.
Fortnite is all about choice. While the game’s original mode was a more traditional battle royale, the current version of the game supports several other options.
Players can play in duos, squads, and a few other game modes. There is no longer one standard way to play – players are encouraged to play a version of the game that suits them best.
As such, Fortnite continues to evolve in new ways and it seems likely that it will try out new experimental game modes over time.
The Numbers Game – 100 People Games vs 60 People Games
If you’re looking for simple differences, it’s a good idea to look at the numbers. Apex has a maximum of sixty players, while Fortnite supports one hundred.
Fortnite has been available for just under two years, while Apex has only been released for a few months. Fortnite is in its eighth season, while Apex is currently wrapping up its first.
The two games are separated by numbers in many ways, some of which are more important than others. The difference in numbers shows not only two different kinds of design decisions, but also the different paths the games take as their respective stories unfold.
Apex Legends and Fortnite are the two most popular battle royale games on the market right now, but outside of looks, the two games are quite different.
However, it is a matter of personal preference to find out which one is really better. Fortnite has history and numbers on its side, but Apex innovates in interesting ways.
Which is better in the end depends on the player.
