Note that rarity levels apply within a single weapon class, not across the board; for example, there are cases where a certain green weapon might be better than a blue weapon just because the first weapon class is usually more powerful than the latter.
Weapon Rarity Color Guide
Target is the most common weapon type in the game. This is the basic version of a weapon, with the lowest damage level and no extras.
You’ll inevitably come across dozens of these weapons, and they’re worth dropping for pretty much everything else on the map. That doesn’t mean you should avoid or won’t kill all bladed weapons, but rather that this type of weapon is the least powerful version of a particular weapon.
Green weapons are a step up from white, but you’ll still find them with relatively little effort during your average games. These weapons tend to deal more damage than blade weapons and are also the first weapon color with multiple subtypes.
You’ll want to take a closer look at rare weapons as variations can tell you a lot not only about the stopping power of the given weapon, but also the rate of fire and even how far the weapon is most powerful.
Rare weapons are a step above rare weapons. You’ll usually find at least one on a map if you’re looking for such a weapon, but be careful not to get caught while searching.
Again, this type of weapon usually has a higher damage level than the lower category, but doesn’t deal as much damage as higher-level weapons. Rare is usually the best level for the original version of most weapons in the game, and variants are usually limited to higher rarity levels.
If you’re lucky enough to find a rare weapon in the game, you’ve found something that can withstand most combat.
Epic weapons are hard to find, but they really are a game changer. For the most part, these weapons are the best the average player can hope to find in a match, and you certainly aren’t guaranteed to find an epic weapon every round.
If you find an epic weapon, you will generally find it as an upgraded version of one of the variants found in the Uncommon level. These weapons are worth fighting for because they can make or break your game.
Simply put, these weapons are the best of the best. If you manage to find a legendary weapon, you’ll deal more damage than anyone else on the map.
However, you can play dozens of games without seeing a legendary weapon and one is rarely worth fighting for. Instead, try to get a good weapon at a lower level and try to take out others while looking for the biggest prizes.
However, if you’re lucky, you can use a legendary weapon to turn the tide of a game.
Fortnite Weapon Classifications
Now that you know the rarity levels in Fortnite, you can start figuring out how they all apply to the various weapons in the game. Fortnite weapons are divided into a few different classes, each of which can be further subdivided.
Below are the weapon ratings you need to know to win.
Assault rifles are the bread and butter of Fortnite. They are good at both long and short range, have a decent amount of ammunition in the magazine, and have very few real drawbacks.
Assault rifles have several variants, most of which rely on one or more of the cannon forts. Variations on the assault rifle family offer to be better at medium or long range combat, and some are almost as useful as sniper rifles for headshots.
Rarer assault rifles can be incredibly devastating in the hands of new players, but they can also be incredible equalizers, even in the hands of players who have never played the game before.
The ultimate long-range weapon in any shooting game, the Sniper Rifle family in Fortnite works the same way it does in real life. This is a weapon that revolves around taking out others from a distance, with the drawback of having a very slow rate of fire and requiring the sniper to stay put to get the most out of their weapon.
Sniper Rifles are incredibly deadly in the hands of experienced players and those who know the terrain, while newer players won’t benefit as much from weapons. Sniper rifles arguably have one of the highest skill levels of any weapon in the game.
This is the essential short-range weapon for Fortnite. While variants of the shotgun generally revolve around rate of fire and degree of spread, all versions of the pistol work well for close firefights.
This is one of the strongest weapons for those with a good pinch speed as it can almost certainly take out any opponent that isn’t fast enough when pulling a turn. The higher tier variants of the shotgun tend to be some of the most dominant weapons in Fortnite.
Sub Machine Guns
The noble SMG is the ultimate hip firearm, focusing more on spraying and praying than any real sense of precision. It requires the player to keep track of ammunition and know the weapon’s effective range, but those best equipped to use the weapon can take out an entire mob in just seconds.
A good SMG may not be worth much when dealing with distant opponents, but there are few weapons in the game that can launch as many rounds on the field in such a short time as the SMG.
The Light Machinegun and Minigun are basically the SMG on steroids. The LMG is terribly inaccurate, but it shoots enough shots per second that you probably don’t even notice.
The Minigun is even worse when it comes to spreading, but it often seems like it can shoot forever. While none of the weapons are used as often as you might expect, seeing one on the field can change the flow of the game.
Both high-capacity weapons have the ability to reduce the crowd in the early stages of the game.
The basic pistol is not a good weapon. It has decent range, but very little damage. However, it is the improved parts of this family that matter.
The suppressed gun lets you take stealth kills, while the hand cannon lets you deal a massive amount of damage. This is the family of weapons where rarity is most important, as only the improved shapes of the gun are really worth keeping.
However, in the right hands, a suppressed pistol or hand cannon can definitely become a game-winning weapon.
In terms of damage per shot, the Rocket Launcher and the Grenade Launcher are unbeatable. Both deal a massive amount of damage to both opponents and structures, with the former being slightly easier to use than the latter.
However, both weapons have a very slow rate of fire and neither is very smart to use in tight spaces. However, these weapons change the game as new players can use the highest level of damage to overcome any skill shortages that may be holding them back.
If you’re lucky enough to land one of these in a round, make sure to save the weapon for when it can do more damage.
