It’s the year 2020. I’m ready for a session of Fortnite, one of my favorite games of recent years. He’s like an old friend right now, although I admit I hate it at times.
I click Start. What is this? Error 20006? Oh, another old friend. What should I do?
Fortnite error 20006 occurs when you try to launch Fortnite and has been affecting players occasionally since 2018. When opening the game executable file, the game will not start and an error message will appear: “The game could not be started. error: 20006 (Unable to create service (StartService failed: 193))”.
You mention that you can check something called “Easy Anti-Cheat” online to fix the problem, but in my experience sticking to it didn’t solve anything.
The cause of error 20006 is a problem with the Easy Anti-Cheat service that Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, use to spot and monitor hacking and cheating. Were you trying to cheat or did something unintentionally happen to your EasyAntiCheat.exe?
If you’re trying to cheat, I’ll admit I’m judging you for it, but that’s okay. Actually I don’t know and I will help you anyway.
The Easiest Fix Fortnite Error 20006: Repairing Easy Anti-Cheat
The first thing to try is to verify your Fortnite installation. Simply click the Settings icon next to the Launch button in the Epic Games launcher, choose Verify and cross your fingers.
It can take a significant amount of time, up to a few minutes, so be patient.
Once that process is complete, open your Fortnite installation folder. For Windows users, this is usually C:\Program Files\Epic Games\Fortnite.
There, open the following folders in succession: Binaries, Win64, EasyAntiCheat. Open EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe and click Repair Service.
While this seems to work for most Fortnite players, I know a lot of people who had to come up with additional solutions. If you tried to fix it and still couldn’t start the game, things get a bit more technical.
The Second Easiest Fix Fortnite Error 20006: Uninstalling Easy Anti-Cheat
Technically this solution is easier than the previous one but you should try to play the game without Easy Anti-Cheat which may seem liberating or like you are trying to get away with some bad stuff so go ahead and feel your feelings and try it.
Follow the steps above to fix Easy Anti-Cheat but just click Uninstall after opening the executable file. You would think this would prevent you from starting the game, and it should, but it works for a lot of people.
Sufficient safeguards against fraud so far.
Intermediate Difficulty: Deleting EasyAntiCheat.sys
Assuming the game has launched and you’re reading this instead of losing to a 12-year-old hacker with particularly bad taste in character skins, you might have to dig a little deeper.
First, make sure you are logged in to an administrator account in Windows. To be sure, click the Windows button, then Settings, and then Accounts.
If you are already an administrator, skip to the next section. If you do not have administrator rights, click Family and other users.
Select the account that needs the privileges, then Change Account Type, and then choose Admin from the drop-down menu.
To remove EasyAntiCheat.sys, open the folder C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. Again, remember that you need administrator rights to do this.
If you are not comfortable with removing it completely, you can simply rename it to get the same effect. If this causes problems when starting the game, you may need to rename the file or do a fresh install of the game.
