Discussions about game device controls are as old as time. Everyone has an opinion about the “right” way to play certain games. Fortnite is no different.
Most people will tell you that keyboard and mouse are the way to go because Fortnite is a deep sea shooter game. On the other hand, PS4 and Xbox players will vouch for their beloved gamepads until they are blue in the face.
So which one is best for Fortnite? What are my options? Do I need to change the way I play? We will explore all the answers to these questions in this post.
Advantages of playing Fortnite on keyboard
As mentioned above, players of all types of shooting games will tell you that the combination of keyboard and mouse is unbeatable. They are not entirely wrong.
- Aiming with the mouse feels natural to anyone who has used a computer.
- Moving and shooting your character with the reliable WASD keys is also more accurate and flexible.
- In addition to all this, playing Fortnite on a PC with keyboard and mouse offers no aiming assistance, giving you complete control over your shots.
With all these advantages, is there any hope for the controlling warriors?
Advantages of playing Fortnite on controller
Controllers and gamepads have been a staple of consoles since the dawn of home gaming. Thanks to the analog sticks, they have also become a good option for playing shooting games, including Fortnite.
If you’re playing on a console, like the Switch and PS4, this will be your only default option (more on that later). You can also use most of the drivers on the PC and it has some advantages.
For starters, the game automatically provides a tool to target the players moving the controllers. This means that the game will recognize that you are using a controller and help you a bit with your aim. However, don’t expect him to suddenly become a target god. The trade-off is enough to offset the speed of keyboard and mouse players.
The other advantage of controllers is that they are easier to configure. Whether you have small hands or not, the buttons on a controller are easily accessible. Plus, the shoulder triggers feel like you’re firing a real pistol and you can add some noise to your dive too.
Should I switch to one or the other?
This depends on what you are used to playing. If you play most of your games on a console, even shooting games like Call of Duty, a controller will feel more natural. The aiming aid of the game will help with the advantage that the keyboard players have.
On the other hand, if you’re playing shooters with your keyboard and mouse, switching makes no sense for Fortnite. Stick to the trusted weapons of your choice.
Of course, this is a choice PC gamers can afford, but what about console gamers?
Can I use a keyboard on console?
Not standard. All current-gen consoles, Switch, Xbox One, and PS4, only support controllers and controller-like devices by default.
However, there are adapters that allow a keyboard and mouse to look like a controller on your console. What they do is translate the mouse movements to the console and make it look like a right analog stick. The problem is, this isn’t exactly the same as playing on a PC. These devices are also unofficial so they will likely have problems using them.
The bottom line
The choice of controller you use depends on you and what you want to get out of the game.
If you really want to get better at Fortnite and play on your PC, then the keyboard-mouse combination has the advantage. At the same time, there is nothing better than playing games on a device that you feel comfortable with. Learning to play on another device always takes some time, so choose wisely and don’t forget to have fun.
